Abstract

There are three objectives in this thesis, they are, 1) to study the meaning and significance of the five sense-faculties (Indriya) and the sixteen knowledges (Soasa-ñāa), 2) to comparative study of the five sense-faculties (Indriya) and the sixteen knowledges (Soasa-ñāa), and 3) to construct of indicator of the five sense-faculties (Indriya) and the sixteen knowledges (Soasa-ñāa)

This research is the documentary one and the field study research. It is to analytically study the detail of the five sense-faculties and sixteen knowledges which under the model of the development of the four foundations of mindfulness or the  Insight Meditation. And it is brought to construct the evaluation of the five sense-faculties in both before and after the meditation practice. The sample group of study is 200 M.A. and Ph.D. students who applied for practicing the Insight Meditation Project of Graduate School, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in the Academic Year of 2012 on November, 25th to December, 14th, 2012 at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Wangnoi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. It is to use the evaluation of the five sense-faculties construting from the study on data.

From the result of study is found that the concept of the five sense-faculties (Indriya) is 1) the power of confidence (Sadhindriya), 2) the power of energy (Viriyindriya), 3) the power of mindfulness (Satindriya), 4) the power of concentration (Samādhindriya), and 5) the power of wisdom (paññindriya). The five sense-faculties is the essentace of meditation practice. It is the principle constructing of readiness and indicator of the process of the meditators and the concept of the sixteen knowledges (Soasa-ñāa) is the result of the development of Insight Meditation which improving the five sense-faculties balance the sixteen knowledges occurred respectively e.g. Nāmarūparicchedañāa etc.

The relationship of the sixteen knowledges (Soasa-ñāa) and the five sense-faculties (Indriya), when Saddhā and Paññā, Viriya and Samādhi, and Sati (mindfulness) of meditators Vipassanāyānika and Samathayānika, is balanced, the Paññā occurred, it is called the sixteen knowledges (Soasa-ñāa).

The construction of indicator of the five sense-faculties compared with the sixteen knowledge had gotten from the concept of comparison between the seven purifications (Visuddhi) and the sixteen knowledge (Soasa-ñāa). This construction of indicator is to use the balance of the five sense-faculties compare with the form of Insight Meditation practice, the fisrt form: the comparision between Saddhindriya and Paññindriya in the form of Insight Meditation practice that is walking, sitting, and noting the six sense-doors and sub-activities, the second form: Viriyindriya and Samādhindriya in the form of walking, the third form: Satindriya is the center of connection balance the two pairs in noting the six sense-doors and sub-activities, and the fourth form: the comparision between Samādhindriya and Viriyindriya in the form of sitting.

From the evaluation of the five sense-faculties of the insight meditators in pretest and posttest is found that the total mean of the score is statistic significantly increase (p<.๐.๕), except knowledge and understanding in noting the six sense-doors and sub-activities which is in medium level. The indicator of the five sense-faculties compare with the sixteen knowledges, the first form is statistic significantly increase, then the form of second, third and fourth is in medium level. The indicator is construted by the evaluation of the five sense-faculties has the benefit for explanation of the level of five Indriyas by occurring of Ñāa obviously. Besides, the indicator can be used for the tool of evaluation the result of Insight meditators or meditators who developing the four foundations of mindfulness in the other places and it can be also used in the way for construction of the tool for evaluation of other Dhamma’s sections.
