Abstract

Abstract

The purposes of the study are three-fold: (1) to study the history and the main points of the Four Reigns, (2) to study the Buddhist Teachings appeared in the Four Reigns, and (3) to analyze the Buddhist ways of life according to the Four Reigns.

The researcher studied the Four Reigns which is the Thai classical literature written by M.R. Kukrit Pramoj, Buddhist Teachings from the Tipitaka and other references.

The result shows that there are Buddhist Teachings appeared in the Four Reigns i.e. the Tilakkhana, Yonisomanasikara, Death Contemplations, Brahmavihara, Iddhipada, and Disa 6. Those Buddhist Teachings were applied by Ploy who was the main character. She applied the Buddhist Teachings to develop herself and lived with other people from being a child, a teen, an adult, and an old age.  With those Buddhist Teachings, she lived with happiness and aimed to pass away with peacefulness. The researcher believes that this is a perfect way of living.

Moreover, the researcher found a few interesting ideas from the Four Reigns which can be applied into the daily life.  They are as follows:

1.   Every single item that changes is the truth. Therefore, do not attach to anything but do adjust to the change that happens.

2.   M.R. Kukrit Pramoj shared his ideas of happiness living through the Four Reigns which came from his own jeweled experience.

3.   He provided the true meaning of being a human; in which we need self development by acting our roles and solving the problems that bring suffering.

4.   He provided the guideline of problem solving by using the wisdom to see the truth of life.

5.   He gave us the correct understanding of suffering that happens from the attachment of our mind.

6.   He gave us the correct understandings that the true happiness is the peace and come from sharing.
