Abstract

                   This research had three purposes. They were  to (1) study five precepts, (2) study Hiri-Ottuppa (Integrity)in Theravada Buddhism, and (3)study Hiri-Ottuppa (Integrity) for supporting five precepts in Theravada Buddhism. The results were found as follows:

                   Five precepts in Theravada Buddhism were considered as rules for people in the society to follow as disciples according to their own status in the society. There were two parts of precepts. The first part was to train oneself for a high progress in morals. The second part was to think about the benefits of others or society. The precept could be considered as disciples to create a complete society for a happy life. Besides, it could be considered as a tool to control a good behavior of body and mind, and a practice for getting rid of harsh desire shown in body and words for a more delicate behavior. The precepts also focused on living together  with the others happily in the society including developing oneself’ s body and mind.

                   The principle of Hiri-Ottuppa (Integrity) in Theravada Buddhism was shame and fear to do sins.)Hiri-Ottuppa (Integrity) helped people to keep precepts permanently. Fostering Hiri-Ottuppa (Integrity) in the mind of all aged people could prevent offending the precepts.

                   The principle of Hiri-Ottuppa (Integrity) for supporting the five precepts in Theravada Buddhism was abstaining from killing animals, from stealing, from sexual misconduct, from lie, and from alcohol drink. A scripture of Wisuthimak Silnithes said that Hiri-Ottuppa (Integrity) was a base of precepts because when Hiri-Ottuppa (Integrity) existed, the precept happened and remained. Without Hiri-Ottuppa (Integrity), the precept could not happen. Thus, Hiri-Ottuppa (Integrity) was a base of human to abstain from all sins.
