Abstract

  This thesis had three purposes. They were to (1) study the history and details of the Thai poetry literature, (2) analyze Buddha’s Dhamma in the Thai poetry  and (3) analyze the values of Buddha’s Dhamma in the Thai poetry impacting on Thai society. This was a documentary research. Data were from collectd Tripitaka scripture, Attakatha, Diga, Anudigaa, and texts including the thesis related to the research. The data were analyzed and reported descriptively. The results were found as follows:

               “Literature” is a product which has been creatively composed and inherited for a very long time. It is a book which is admitted as the best written and valued text leading to amusement, and pleasure to the readers. The Thai Literature  such as songs, poetry, and poems was originally developed before Sukhothai Period. At present, Thai poetry had changed from the initial stage to the more developed stage in various types, different from the past poetry. Thus, reading the current poetry needs various criteria of analysis to benefit the readers, such as entertainment, self-training, culture, wisdom support leading to self-comprehension, social creation, and better understanding of the world and life.

              Thai textbook according to the core curricula for basic education in Buddhist Era 2551 contained poetry proverbs in Nirasbhukhaothong literature, and Klonglokanit which consisted of Dhamma principles in the content such as stories of “the Law of Action, Triluk (Three Common Characteristics), Athisathanadham (Dhamma Vows), Lokadhamma (Worldly Conditions), and gratitude. These Dhamma principles should be taken for real practice for comprehending the reality of life, for applying in daily life, and for developing the ability to the complete human.

              Dhamma principles in the poetry support and benefit the Thai society with the value of emotions, morality, language beauty, Buddhism, culture, education, politics, government, and life ideas leading to a good society, culture, beliefs, and ethics for living happily in the society.
