Abstract

This thesis was mainly of three objectives, such as: 1) to study Sovacassata Doctrines (obedience) as described in Theravada Buddhism; 2) to study supporting and obstacle doctrines to the obedience; 3) to study application the value of obedience to the context of Thai society current. This was a type of qualitative research which focuses on the data collected from the Theravada Buddhist scriptures: Tipitaka, Sub-Cormmentaries, and other related technical papers rewritten in descriptive.

The findings have shown that the Sovacassata was the important Dhamma which the Buddha has categorized propitious in the Mangala Sutta and virtues which make for protection in Nathakarana Dhamma. In addition, the obedient Buddhist can identify the characteristics in 3 important qualities, such as; listening and following to the instruction respectfully, and appreciating the gratitude to the instructor. The obedient ones can be categorized into 2 kinds, such as the obedience that the Lord Buddha uses to glorify and it is propitious for life and another was the one not to be praised. The training one to be an obedient was found Anumana Sutta for considers themselves. The examples of the obedient person in the era and current can be the characteristics of obedient person clearly.

For supporting Doctrines to the obedience was found such as Mangala Sutta, Nathakarana Dhamma, Kalayanamitta Dhamma, Sobhanakarana Dhamma, and Yonisomanasikara etc. The obstacle Doctrines to the obedience such as repulsion (Patika), conceit (Mana) in the fetters (Sanyojana) etc.

Application and value of obedient Buddhist following Sovacassata to the context of Thai society in three categories, supporting their goodness for oneself, society, and Buddhism.
