The Roles of Sangha in Community Development : A Case Study of WatTakaong Ayutthaya Province

Abstract

 

ABSTRACT

 

 

           The research consisted of three main objectives, namely: i) to study the roles of Sangha in community development: a case study of Wat Takarong Ayutthaya Province; ii) to compare level of people’s opinions concerning the roles of Sangha in community development: a case study of Wat Takarong Ayutthaya Province; and iii) to study problems, obstacles and suggestions relating the roles of Sangha in community development: a case study of Wat Takarong Ayutthaya Province. This present study employed a Mixed Method with both Quantitative, with a survey, and qualitative research methodologies. The study sample consisted of 365 people who lived in area of Wat Takarong Ayutthaya Province. The subjects were recruited based on the sample size of Taro Yamane. The instrument used in data collection was a questionnaire. The data were analyzed in terms of Frequency, Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation. Inferential statistics of t-test and F-Test were used to determine the differences in mean scores of both groups, and One Way ANOVA was used to determine the differences in mean scores among three groups or more. Finally, the Least Significant Difference (LSD) was employed to test the differences between means of each pair. As for qualitative methodology, in-depth interviews were used with 10 key Informants, and data were analyzed by means of content analysis.

           The study findings revealed that

           1) The overall opinions of people towards the roles of Sangha in community development: a case study of Wat Takarong Ayutthaya Province was at the great level (3.81). When considering each aspect, it was found that the opinions toward all aspects were at great levels: the aspect of mind was found at 4.12, the environment 3.89, the economy 3.75, the society 3.74 and the education 3.56, respectively.

           2) When comparing the opinions of people toward the roles of Sangha in community development: a case study of Wat Takarong Ayutthaya Province, classified by personal factors, it was found that people with different gender, age and level of education had no different opinions toward the roles of Sangha in community development: a case study of Wat Takarong Ayutthaya Province, with statistical significance at 0.05 level denying the formulated hypotheses. However, those with different occupation and income had different opinions toward the roles of Sangha in community development: a case study of Wat Takarong Ayutthaya Province, with statistical significance at 0.05 level accepting formulated hypotheses.

 

           3) As regards problems and obstacles on the roles of Sangha in community development: a case study of Wat Takarong Ayutthaya Province, it is found that in aspect of society, the monks do not attain participation from concerned agents so that they have no chance to participate community development; in economy, monks lack budget support from the Sangha organization and also governmental agents; in environment, the monks lack facilities for training and developing community; in education, the monks are not supported to teach school children the Dhamma in school; in mental, the Sangha organization still lacks personnel for proactive work, and finally, inspection and evaluation of work have been conducted without efficiency and effectiveness.

          As regards recommendation on the roles of Sangha in community development: a case study of Wat Takarong Ayutthaya Province, it is recommended that in aspect of society, there should be agreement between monks and concerned agents to realize monks’ role in participating community development and also propagating Dhamma; in economy, monks should be supported by the Sangha organization and also governmental agents with budget in form of fund and also income; in environment, the monks should be supported with facilities like equipments or machine for developing environment and also monks should be trained about frame in developing environment; in education, the monks should be supported in teach school children the Dhamma in school; in mental, the Sangha organization should support and train personnel for proactive work, and finally, inspection and evaluation of work should be conducted with efficiency and effectiveness.
