Abstract

ABSTRACT

Objectives of the study were 1) to study a process of self-development for inner awakening in Buddhadhamma and Awakening Psychology; 2) to construct a model of self-development process based on Awakening Buddhist Psychology; and  3) to check the validity and present it. The study was a mixed method, using quantitative method to enhance results of the qualitative method. Key informants for the qualitative research consisted of 15 professionals in Buddhism and Modern Psychology selected by purposive sampling method. For the quantitative research, the Two-stage cluster sampling method was used to get 553 samples. The tools for data collection were an in-depth interview and a questionnaire. A content analysis and induction were used for analyzing qualitative data, whereas the quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, correlation analysis using a computer program. Moreover, the congruence analysis of the model with an empirical evidence and an analysis of direct and indirect influence of each variable were analyzed by the program of LISREL.

Results of the study were as follows:

1. For a study of a process of self-development for inner awakening in Buddhadhamma and Awakening Psychology it found that a process of self-development for inner awakening in Buddhadhamma and Awakening Psychology consisted of 1) the self-development process based on Buddhist psychology;                          2) teachersgood friendship in Buddhist schools; and 3) the state of an inner awakening.

2) In respect of a construction of a model of self-development process based on Awakening Buddhist Psychology it revealed that there were 2 causal models, the first model was the self-development process based on Buddhist Psychology with teachersgood friendship in Buddhist schools as a mediator variable including 3 unobserved variables divided into 2 endogenous latent variables comprising awakening, which consisted of 3 observed: (1) knowledge, (2) waking up (3) foreshore, and teachersgood friendship in Buddhist schools as a mediator variable comprising 7observed variables; (1) loveliness, (2) respectfulness, (3) honorableness, (4) being good advisors, (5) good listeners, (6) being able to explain complex issue, and (7) non-guiding downturns; and an exogenous latent variable which was the self-development process based on Awakening Buddhist Psychology consisted of 7 observed variables: (1) self-awareness, (2) self-value, (3) self-knowledge of the true potentiality, (4) application in daily life effectively, (5) Morality, (6) Concentration, and (7) Wisdom. The second model was the self-development process based on Awakening  Psychology using Tri Sikkha as a mediator variable consisted of 3 unobserved variables divided into 2 endogenous latent variables including awakening, which consisted of 3 observed variables: (1) knowledge, (2) waking up, and (3) foreshore, and the self-development based on Tri Sikkha including a mediator variable consisted of . observed variables: (1) loveliness, (2) respectfulness, (3) honorableness, (4) being good advisors, (5) good listeners,                    (6) being able to explain complex issue, and (7) non-guiding downturns; and 1 exogenous latent variable which was the self-development process based on Awakening Psychology including 4 observed variables: (1) self-awareness, (2) self-value, (3) self-knowledge of the true potentiality, (4) application in daily life effectively.

3. The results of the congruence analysis of the model and empirical evidence showed that there was congruence of the model and empirical evidence in both 2 models as follows.

   1) A model of the self-development process based on Awakening Buddhist Psychology consisted of  teachersgood friendship in Buddhist schools as a mediator variable with its chi-square at 38.75, degree of freedom = 51, and p=0.90, Goodness of Fit Index (GFI) = 0.99, Adjusted Goodness of Fit Index (AGFI) = 0.98, Root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.00, direct influence and indirect influence upon awakening (TUV) = 0.70 and .001 at statistically significant value of .01.

  2) A model of the self-development process based on Awakening Psychology with Tri Sikkha as a mediator variable had its chi-square at 18.97, degree of freedom = 20, and p=.052. Goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.99, Adjusted Goodness of Fit Index (AGFI) = 0.98. Root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.00, Variance of Tri Sikkha (TRI) = 94% , and Variance of awakening (TUV) with its direct influence and indirect influence upon awakening (TUV) = 0.01 and 0.97 at statistically significant value of .01.
