Abstract

This dissertation entitled “The promotion of Archaeological Sites Conservation at Wiang Chiang Saen Distric Chiang Rai Province with the Buddhist Integration” has three objectives: 1) to study concepts, theories and Buddhadhamma relating to the promotion of archeological site conservation, 2) to study problems and obstacles concerning with the promotion of archeological site conservation in Wiang Chiang Saen Distric Chiang Rai Province, and 3) to propose guidelines for promoting archeological site conservation in Wiang Chiang Saen Distric Chiang Rai Province through the Buddhist principles of integration. This research employed documentary research and personal interview.

The results showed that the promotion of archeological sites conservation has three main obstacles: staff, budget, and management. The relevant Buddhadhammas that can be applied into the conservation of the archeological sites are of the following virtues: seven Aparihãniyadhammas (conditions of welfare), Sappurisa-Dhamma (qualities of a good man), and four Padhãnas (effort). As regards Aparihãniyadhamma, it refers to one specific quality, “to honor and worship city and provincial shrines and pagodas and never to neglect to celebrate these places.”  With respect to Sappurisa-Dhamma, the relevant virtues include Dhammaññutã (understanding of self and values of history and archeological relicts), Parisaññutã (understanding of community and local cultures that reflect the root of the community). Finally, four Padhãnas, the relevant ones include Savara-padhãna (the effort to prevent possible damages), Pahãna-padhãna (the effort to eliminate the existing damages), Bhãvanã - padhãna (the effort to develop a new way to conserve the sites), and Anurakkhanã - padhãna (the effort to maintain the existing approaches to conservation). The mentioned model is called PPC Model; the former P actually means promotion, the latter means public mind and C comes to embrace the conservation respectively.
