A Study of the Lokavidu (Knower of the Worlds) in Theravada Buddhism

Abstract

The purposes of this research are : (1) to study of concept Loka in general religions view   (2) to study of concept Loka  in Theravada  Buddhism (3) to analyze of Lokavidu on Buddhist teachings  in Theravada Buddhism. This study is a documentary research.   

           The Result of research is found as following :

           The world origin theism in Judaism Christianity and Islamic etc.  means the land of God, everything in this world creation by God, God is the first original of world, hi is of great natural, not thing else above God. The please and suffering of human being to control by the God always. God a judgment everything and the world walk underline of God allocate. Human being they can go to heaven they much to practice following of God, and be faithful in God.

           The world origin in Theravāda Buddhism means reside of everything, world is arising and falling follow of the time, world is underline of three characteristics law, the unstable thing befall and according to natural process. Buddhist teaching that today residing of our universal is the temporary world, we not interested it so much, because this is world outside our self and than it not the path avoid from suffering. Buddha’s teaching that human being can avoid this world suffering we much according to Noble Eightfold Path practice, this way can bring creature world from suffering exactly.

           The word “Lokavidù” in the Buddhist scriptures means the world of enlightented. The word “Knower” means the Buddha knows 3 worlds; 1) Sankhara Loka means the Loka is the world of formation, 2) Sattava Loka is the world of beings and 3) Okasa Loka is the world of location. The types of the world realized by the Buddha are 1) Sankhara Loka means formations, things formed by factors, in three characteristics, it means body or form composed of 4 elements, is of 2 kinds; (1) Upadinnakasankara is the kammically grasped phenomena and (2) Anupadinnakasankhara is the kammically ungrasped phenomena. 2) Sattavaloka means those who are concerned with 5 Khandhas satisfactorily. Satava means beings having life, feeling and being moveable, including living things with 2-4 or more feet and without any feet except plants and trees , Deva, Mara and Promma etc. 3) Okasaloka means the world defined by occasion, existing in space. Location for beings to live, earth for beings to live, Universal.

           In Buddhism the Buddha emphasizes the world is the body so said that ‘I (Tathagata) commanded the world, the birth of the world, the end of the world, and the realization of the world. It appears in the human body is about 1 square wah, which has a perception of minds that has it.’ So that Phra-Atthakathājān commentator, he explained :- The commanded the world meant to be suffering true. The birth of the world means the origin of suffering. The end of the world means cessation of suffering, and the practice of suffering means the path leading to the cessation of suffering.
