A Development of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adolescence’s Anger Management by Buddhist Peaceful Means

Abstract

This research is of 3 objectives: 1. to study theoretical concepts of the Western anger management and Buddhist peaceful means, 2. to create adolescents’ anger management with adolescence’s anger management program to develop cognitive behavioral therapy for adolescence’s anger management by Buddhist peaceful means, and 3. to present the results of adolescence’s anger management with adolescence’s anger management program to develop cognitive behavioral therapy for adolescence’s anger management by Buddhist peaceful means. It is a mixed - method research designed by the creation of training program to experiment with secondary school students divided into groups of 20 experimental students and 20 controlled ones. The research tools  are sets of adolescence’s anger management training, questionnaires related to anger management, mindfulness assessment together with mindfulness practice and anger management records, and the data analysis is done before and after the experiment by two-way analysis of variance (Two-Way ANOVA: T-test, p-value).

The results of the study showed that the Western theory and Buddhism principles in the management of anger were consistent in the causes of anger, anger expression and the consequences The Buddhist peaceful means can explain the roots of anger. Therefore, the development of internal peace is used for anger management.

The training program of Adolescence’s Anger Management developed by the development of cognitive behavioral therapy for adolescence’s anger management with Buddhist peaceful means, the researcher adopted the Khanti, Metta, right thinking process and understanding (Yonisomanasikarn), skill to manage anger with mindfulness for transforming anger to the power of creation by the set of training program that emphasizes students to learn and understand their own emotions, letting them exchange experiences, practice skills and do homework. This training program consists of 1 mindfulness activity and 10 anger management activities.

             From bringing set of training program to the experiment, it is found that the experimental group has the average scores from the anger management questionnaires and from the mindfulness assessment higher than the before experiment and higher than the controlled group with significant implication in statistics at level 0.01. This research found the new knowledge called R-E-S-T Model, i.e. R-Reasoned attention: the practice to think for having wisdom with Yonisomanasikarn , E-Encourages learning contribute experience initiating exchange learning from experience. S-Satipatthana mindfulness Kayanupasana Satipatthana for knowing the arisen emotional feeling and the physical movement, such as breath-in and breath-out. The process of training practicing mindfulness in this research is divided into 3 phases, the initial phase (Start) before starting the activities, the strong phase (Strong) is having mindfulness during proceeding the activities and stable phase (Strive) is the continuous practice of mindfulness after the experiment is finished, resulting the T-Transform anger with cultivating compassion and tolerance.
