Abstract

The thesis entitled ‘A Study of Relationship between the Tilakkhana and Spiritual Well-Being of Life’ is of three objectives as 1) to study the Tilakkhana or the Three Characteristics in Buddhism, 2) to explore the concept of Spiritual Well-being and 3) to study the relationship between the Three Characteristics and the Spiritual Well-being.

The study revealed that the Three Characteristics in Buddhism refers to the Three Sights of Beings to determine that all conditioned things are impermanent, all conditioned things are subject to stress and conflict and all things are not-self or soulless. These are natural laws that exist all the time or it is known as the orderliness of nature.

Regarding the term ‘well-being’, it refers to the internal character of the person that expresses the completeness. It is divided into two characters – the physical well – being and the spiritual well – being.  The spiritual well-being is a mental propensity toward the goodness, good fortune and compassionate. According to the Buddhist concept, the spiritual well – being consists of generosity, observing the precepts, mental development and sympathetic joy etc. Persons who have a happy mind can realize all problems; as a result, they can develop themselves to be stronger.

From the study of two issues, it is important to note that the relationship between the Three Characteristics and Spiritual Well-being is intertwined in each other. It consists of the well-being both physical and mental. That is to say, it is knowledge and understanding of happiness, which will be free and independent. Persons should consider through the causes and factors, including the recognition that all human lives fall into the law of Three Characteristics.
