Abstract

This thesis entitled ‘An Analytical Study of Ontological Concept of Evil (pāpa) in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy’  has three objectives: 1) to study the concept of ontolgoy, 2) to study the concept of evil (pāpa) in Theravada Buddhist philosophy, and 3) to analyze the ontological concept of evil (pāpa) in Theravada Buddhist philosophy. This is a documentary research.

In the research, it was found that two concepts of ontology are found in this study: (1) Ontology in western philosophy refers to two aspects: 1) Subjective ontology and 2) Objective ontology, 2) Ontology in Theravada Buddhist philosophy embraces two aspects: 1) Conventional truth, and 2) Ultimate truth. Here, the concept of evil in Theravada Buddhist philosophy is considered in three types: 1) defilements (evil as a kilesa), 2) action (evil as a kamma), and 3) result of action (evil as a vipāka).

As far as the research is concerned, the Ontology of evil in Theravada Buddhist philosophy is considered in four aspects: 1) objective evil has two aspects which involve characteristics of absolute and non-absolute individual and committing absolute and non-absolute evil unintentionally, 2) subjective evil has two aspects which involve characteristics of absolute and non-absolute individual and committing absolute and non-absolute sin evil, 3) conventional truth evil, and 4) ultimate truth evil. Theravada Buddhist philosophy chiefly focuses on both the intentional individual and unintentional individual, or mind. The three actions are of bodily, verbal and mental aspects. Meanwhile, the ultimate goal of life is to get rid of ego, understanding life and the world both conventionally and ultimately or called as way of the world and way of the noble life.
