Abstract

This thesis is of the objectives to study Khanti and the observation of the Five Precepts in Buddhism, to study the relationship between Khanti and the observation of the Five Precepts in Buddhism and to study the relationship between Khanti and the observation of the Five Precepts in Thai societies.  In this study, the researcher collected the data and the exemplary cases from both the primary sources and the secondary ones to study the data and the analysis.

From the research, it is found that Khanti is the bodily and mental forbearance and the restraint to what touches us up to the state of the forbearance to the defilements.  In this research, the researcher divided Khanti into two types namely the Khanti which is the Doctrinal Virtue that encourages the daily living goals and the Khanti which is the Doctrinal Virtue that supports the conduct to develop the people into goodness.  The Five Precepts which are the bases of developing the virtues at the high level up to Lakuttara Level.  At the beginning, the Five Precepts observation will be the disciplines or the regulations which are the negative rules to control the bodily and verbal behavior up to the state of the completion of the Five Precepts.        

The Five Precepts observation is the type of Vinaya.  A person can bring Khanti which is the Doctrinal Virtue that encourages the daily living goals to support the observation of the Five Precepts with the restraint to prevent Lobha, Dosa and Moha from arising in the peoples’ minds and Khati also prevents the person from the infringement of the Five Precepts.  Later on,                  a person can bring other Doctrinal Principles to support the complete way of not infringement of the Five Precepts, such as Panna, Sati-Sampajanna, Hiri Ottappa, Khanti and Soracca.  On the other hand, the observation of the Five Precepts is the type of Dhamma.  A person can bring Khanti which is the Doctrinal Virtue that encourages the daily living goals and Khanti which is the Doctrinal Virtue that supports the conduct to develop the people into goodness to support the completion of Vinaya and Dhamma.  Furthermore, a person can bring other Doctrinal Principles to support the completion of the Five Precepts, such as Panca-Dhamma and Gharavasa-Dhamma.   A person can bring Khanti which is the virtue that supports a person’s conduct to develop oneself into goodness, to support the other Doctrinal Principles, such as Dasa-Parami and Ti-Sikkha for developing the Five Precepts to be at the high level.

For the people who observe the Five Precepts in terms of disciplines in Thai societies, they can bring Khanti to tolerate the force of Lobha, Dosa and Moha all of which are the causes to infringe the Five Precepts.  After that, a person can bring the other Doctrinal Principles to support the complete way of not infringing the Five Precepts.   For the people who observe the Five Precepts in terms of Dhamma in Thai societies, they can bring Khanti for destroying Lobha, Dosa and Moha.  A person will then be free from the bodily, verbal and mentally infringement.  Then, the goodness will arise in the peoples’ minds.  Finally, the observation of the Five Precepts will be complete both in Vinaya and Dhamma.
